According to the International Osteoporosis Society exercise is one of the most essential strategies for building and maintaining strong bones and preventing falls and fractures, "Targeted exercise is especially important in that it helps to build muscle strength, improve balance and posture, and maintain bone mass."
Who is the class for?
It is appropriate for anyone, of any age, provided they are mobile enough to get down to - and up from - a mat on the floor.
One in two post menopausal women and one in five men over the age of 55 in the UK experience a significant reduction in bone density.
Osteoporosis is not exclusive to the 50+ age group. Other factors may cause deterioration in bone health at a much younger age including certain medical treatments like chemotherapy (see links above for more information).
Anyone with chronic neck pain who finds regular Pilates classes cause a strain on the neck.
If you have any questions about the suitability of the class for yourself or for another who you think might benefit from the class please email me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
